Affordable ways to stay cool

Try these to avoid the summer heat.

With temperatures climbing to the 90s and beyond in San Diego, we could all use a few more ways to stay cool. Extreme heat can put your health at risk. Read on to see how we’re safely enjoying the summer sun, sand, and everything in between.

Try to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.

If it’s between 10 am – 4 pm, head indoors to stay out of the sun. Days with extreme heat and high humidity keep sweat from evaporating quickly. Your body works harder to cool down and stay at a normal temperature. Extreme heat can trigger heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat rash and heat stroke. Heat stroke is the most serious and can cause permanent damage or death. Look out for these symptoms to stay safe.

Stay hydrated with plenty of liquids, fruits and veggies.

Try to avoid drinks with alcohol and caffeine. Alcoholic and caffeinated drinks can cause you to urinate more, which can lead to dehydration. For something more flavorful than water, quench your thirst with fruit and mint-infused water or a cold brewed caffeine-free herbal tea. Don’t forget, foods can be hydrating too! This watermelon salad, berry smoothie bowl and peach ‘nice’ cream are extra refreshing. Farm boxes offer affordable, fresh produce to enjoy all summer long.
