Special enrollment and qualifying events

Find out how you can get coverage outside of open enrollment.

Open enrollment for 2017 health insurance plans through Covered California begins November 1, 2016 and ends January 31, 2017. During open enrollment, you can buy health insurance without a qualifying event.

Outside of open enrollment, it’s still possible to get the coverage you need and avoid a tax penalty, if you have experienced a qualifying life event. In most cases, you have 60 days from the date the event took place to enroll in a health plan.

What are qualifying events?

Qualifying events include life experiences like:

  • You had a baby or adopted a child
  • You got married
  • You exhausted your COBRA coverage
  • You lost health coverage due to a divorce or legal separation
  • You lost health coverage because your spouse died

If none of the qualifying events apply to you, you may be eligible to apply for Medi-Cal at any time without the need for a qualifying life event.
