Maintaining childhood immunizations during the COVID-19 pandemic

Help keep kids safe, and prevent the outbreak of vaccine-preventable diseases.

As we mark National Immunization Awareness Month this August — an observance dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of immunization throughout our lives — we also mark a challenging year in immunization.

A recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that fewer childhood vaccines have been given during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, public health data shows that the number of vaccinations for kids in California dropped nearly in half this past April compared to April of last year, and this data follows a worrying national trend.

Thanks to childhood vaccinations, 14 million cases of disease are prevented every year in the United States. To avoid outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, and keep children protected, the CDC recommends vaccinations and well-child visits as essential.

Depending on the age of your child, Sharp doctors are offering in-person, well-child checkups, especially if your child is due for vaccines. Contact your child's doctor, who will recommend an in-person or video visit.

For more information, please visit our childhood immunizations page, and download our preventive care checklists to find out which vaccines are recommended. For detailed resources about immunizations, the CDC provides easy-to-read immunization schedules from birth through adulthood.
