3 ways to make work more meaningful

Ways to connect employees to their purpose and their well-being.

How can you make work more meaningful for your employees? It all starts with connection. Employees find meaning in their work when its goals match with their standards or ideas, one study found. Best Health® can help you tap into what your employees want at work, all while supporting their wellness.

Benefits of meaningful work

When employees find purpose in their work, they are often:

  • More committed to the organization and less likely to leave
  • More engaged and more productive

Meaningful work helps motivate employees to do their best, experience less burnout and have positive work outcomes. It also helps build and maintain their health and well-being.

Strengthening meaningful work with wellness

“Best Health focuses on a holistic approach to wellness strategic planning,” explains Kathryn Goldberg, a wellness coordinator. “This includes company culture, leadership, employee engagement, health initiatives and more. We offer support across an organization to create better relationships with employees' wellness and their work.”

Use these tips to guide your wellness strategy and foster more meaningful work.

1

Identify strengths and get leaders involved.

Encourage employees to share their ideas to build stronger bridges between their purpose and their work. Partner with your leaders to identify team members' skills and their unique potential.

Your leaders can also help you to champion wellness at your organization.

Best Health offers tips and resources empowering them to explore the connection between wellness and performance outcomes. Workshops are tailored to your organization's goals. Resources are designed to support leaders' communication while building trust, social connection and vulnerability to drive a culture of wellness.

2

Create space for personal connections.

Continue building trust and encourage employees to get to know one another by making time for play. Employees with strong social connections can motivate and support each other.

“Hosting adult recess breaks and activities are opportunities to bring employees together,” Goldberg says.

She recommends trivia and scavenger hunts to boost clear communication and teamwork. For a quicker setup, consider bingo, board games or puzzles to help employees decompress and think outside the box.

“When employees laugh together, it adds levity to the day, even in uncertain and stressful times,” she explains. “This connection is invaluable to your organization and employees' health.”

3

Find creative ways to bring your mission statement to life.

Your employees already practice your organization's values at work. Put your mission statement into action by helping employees take these values from work to home.

“When you bring employees together at the office and after hours, you make room for more authentic connections, belonging and purpose,” Goldberg says.

If you're not sure where to start, challenge employees to reduce their screen time.

“Try a 'Disconnect to Reconnect' challenge and turn off your phone during meals or while spending time with loved ones,” she offers. “Practicing mindfulness and focusing on the present helps reduce stress and improve mood, which also supports a happier, healthier workforce.”

Or, dive right in. Support causes that align with your employees' and organization's values. Pick a day to volunteer at a food bank, create a team for a 5K, or join a beach cleanup.
