“Eating a diet rich in certain nutrients can affect brain structure and physiology. This can lead to changes in your behavior and even boost your mood,” says Erin Peisach, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and wellness education specialist with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group.

While there’s still much to learn about the relationship between diet, nutrition and mood, Peisach suggests aiming to include more of these foods in your diet to give your brain the fuel it needs.

Fatty fish

Salmon, tuna, herring, mackerel, sardines and other fatty fish are rich in omega-3s. These fats help us have a healthy brain, optimal blood flow and a well-oiled nervous system.

Brazil nuts

Many nuts can help elevate your mood, but Brazil nuts in particular are rich in selenium – a trace mineral that can help lower anxiety, depression and tiredness.

Lentils

Lentils are rich in folic acid, a nutrient necessary to create many important mood neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.

Turkey

Tryptophan, an amino acid that helps make serotonin in the brain, is found in turkey. Serotonin is a chemical that contributes to well-being and happiness.

Yogurt

Probiotics in yogurt are great for digestion, but they can also help beat the blues. The good bacteria can send positive messages to your brain regarding mood and behavior.
