FOR RELEASE ON DECEMBER 15, 2020

SAN DIEGO — Sharp Health Plan, a nonprofit, San Diego-based health plan, today announced that it earned a 5-star rating — the highest possible — for patient experience in the annual Health Care Quality Report Card from California’s Office of the Patient Advocate (OPA). It was the only health plan in California to achieve a 5-star rating for patient experience. Sharp Health Plan also earned top marks, 4 out of 5 stars, for quality of medical care.1

The 2020-21 report card shows the quality of health care for millions of Californians who get their care through Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs). Ten of the state’s largest HMOs and six of the state’s largest PPOs are compared in the report card, and Sharp Health Plan was the only one with the top rating possible for overall patient experience.

“Sharp Health Plan has always been committed to the highest-quality service possible, and that continues as we serve our members during this critical time in health care,” says Melissa Hayden Cook, president and chief executive officer of Sharp Health Plan. “Achieving the highest OPA patient experience rating as a regional health plan is a testament to why so many San Diegans are entrusting Sharp Health Plan with their health insurance.”

Sharp Health Plan’s high quality of care and patient experience comes from its integration with the Sharp HealthCare delivery system, and its unique ability to collaborate with Sharp-affiliated doctors, hospitals and other providers to coordinate member care.

“Patient experience is at the heart of what we do,” says Dr. Cary B. Shames, vice president and chief medical officer of Sharp Health Plan. “The Sharp Experience, our member/patient-centric approach to health care, has consistently led to high patient experience ratings as well as strong clinical outcomes.”

Open Enrollment for 2021 runs now through Dec. 30, 2020, for health coverage that starts on Jan. 1, 2021. Sharp Health Plan offers plans that are affordable and simple, with personal service from fellow San Diegans who care. Visit sharphealthplan.com to learn more.
