A New Year of Health Possibilities!

Find ways to get and stay healthy this year

New Year's Day is a time for reflection on the personal changes we want to make as we look forward to a happy new year. Health-related goals are popular New Year's resolutions, but you may not know where to begin. Below, you'll find ways to get and keep a healthy you, healthy family, healthy home, healthy community and healthy workplace. What will your resolution be?

Healthy You

•    Make healthy food choices. Grab a healthy snack such as fruit, nuts or low-fat cheese.
•     Be active. Try simple things such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Be active for at least 30 minutes a day, five times a week.
•     Protect yourself by wearing a helmet, sunscreen or insect repellent when necessary.
•     Make an appointment for a check-up, vaccination or screening. Preventive care services such as mammography and routine adult physical exams are available at $0 copayment for Sharp Health Plan members.
•     Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
•     Be smoke-free. If you're ready to make a change, enroll in the Best Health smoking cessation health coaching program. It’s free for Sharp Health Plan members. Call 1-877-849-2364 or email besthealth@sharp.com.
•     Get enough sleep. Remember that sleep is a necessity to keep you at your best.

Healthy Family

•     Reduce the chance for auto-related injuries by using seat belts, child safety seats and booster seats that are appropriate for your child's age and weight.
•     Serve healthy meals and snacks.
•     Encourage and support physical activity for every family member.
•     Gather and share family health history.
•     Encourage family members to get check-ups and screenings. Preventive care services such as mammography and routine adult physical exams are available at $0 copayment for Sharp Health Plan members.
•     Get pets vaccinated to keep them healthy.

Healthy Home

•     Go green. Reduce, reuse and recycle.
•     Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on every floor, including the basement and particularly near rooms where people sleep.
•     Keep cleaning products and medications out of the reach of children.
•     Have an emergency plan and practice it often.

Healthy Community

•     Get your immunizations. Sharp Health Plan will cover the flu vaccine if it is provided by your Primary Care Physician (PCP) or by another provider approved by your PCP or Plan Medical Group. There is no copayment for the flu vaccine. If you get a flu vaccine as part of an office visit, the regular office visit copayment will apply.
•     Don't drink and drive or let others drink and drive.

Healthy Workplace

•     Help develop or participate in healthy workplace programs and policies.
•     Stay at home if you are sick.
•     Take steps to prevent job stress.
•     Implement a smoke-free policy.
